"Harnessing Internal Networking: How Breaking Silos Boosts Organizational Synergy and Growth

Create a vibrant tapestry ...

Recently I ran an online workshop for a national organisation with participants from across the country.

It was an opportunity not only to share my knowledge on building meaningful relationships and having productive conversations, but to illustrate the value of connecting departments to learn from each other and share their perspectives.

When you break down silos and bring different departments together, your people, who are at the core of any successful organization, can build an internal network, encompassing everyone from the leadership team, including C-level executives and senior management, to functional departments like Marketing, Sales, Human Resources and operations.

This internal network is further enriched by cross-functional teams, support staff, remote workers, and even new hires and interns. Together, these individuals create a vibrant tapestry that powers the organization. But why is nurturing internal relationships among these groups so crucial?

Firstly, robust internal relationships act as a catalyst for knowledge sharing. When employees connect genuinely, it fosters an environment conducive to freely exchanging information, insights, and best practices. This collaborative spirit is not just limited to individuals but spans across teams and departments, ensuring a seamless flow of ideas.

Secondly, such relationships lay the foundation for enhanced collaboration.

An organization thrives when its various departments and teams operate in harmony, pooling their expertise and resources towards common goals. Strong bonds among team members can ensure that projects are executed smoothly, with minimal friction.

Another significant benefit is career development. Networking internally can unveil avenues for mentorship and learning. Employees, by building connections across different levels and departments, can gain insights into various roles, gather feedback, and potentially discover opportunities for advancement within the organization.

Moreover, with positive internal relationships comes higher employee engagement and satisfaction. When individuals feel connected, understood, and valued, it boosts their morale and commitment. This not only enhances productivity but also contributes to a reduction in turnover, and content employees having clarity about each areas role in achieving the businesses strategic priorities and purpose, resulting in improved customer experience and ultimately shareholder experience.

Following on from the workshop, I received a message from one of the participants who I had encouraged to connect with more senior people in the organisation .  He wanted to share with me that he  had approached a General Manager  at an informal networking and catch-up session and start a conversation  to learn from the experience and knowledge of the senior team member. He even mustered up the courage to ask him to be a guest speaker at our forthcoming learning session and was hopeful that this would open new opportunities and conversations for his cohort.  Which just goes to prove that while reaching out and networking externally has its merits, it's equally vital to look inward.

So in summary-

Ten reasons why internal relationships are key

  1. Knowledge Sharing: Strong internal relationships foster an environment where employees can freely share information, best practices, and insights.

  2. Collaboration: Good relationships are the bedrock of seamless collaboration, ensuring that different departments or teams work well together.

  3. Career Development: Networking internally can provide opportunities for mentorship, learning, and advancement within the organization.

  4. Support and Resource Allocation: Strong connections can lead to quicker resolution of issues as resources and support can be more easily mobilized.

  5. Employee Engagement and Satisfaction: Positive relationships at work can lead to a more engaged and content workforce, which in turn can boost productivity and reduce turnover.

  6. Innovation: Diverse teams that have strong internal relationships can be more innovative as they bring together a variety of perspectives and ideas.

  7. Problem Solving: When challenges arise, a well-connected team can pool its collective knowledge and expertise to find solutions more efficiently.

  8. Cultural Alignment: Building relationships helps in spreading and reinforcing the organizational culture, values, and mission.

  9. Breaking Silos: Effective internal networking prevents the formation of silos, ensuring different departments and teams are aligned and moving towards a common goal.

  10. Identifying solutions to improve the customer experience, retention and advocacy.

In essence, while external networking can open doors to new opportunities and markets, internal networking is equally crucial for an organization's cohesion, productivity, and long-term success. Fostering these relationships can be a potent tool for innovation.

When diverse teams with strong internal bonds come together, they combine a myriad of perspectives and diversity of thought , innovative solutions & approaches that might not have been possible in isolated silos.
