7 ways to create greater opportunities for women

Throughout this month you will no doubt be aware of various celebrations of International Women's Day. It is a time to gather not just to honor the strides we've made but also pause and acknowledge the road ahead to influence positive change for women, not just on our doorstep but globally.

I have no doubt there will be many conversations on the myriad of challenges women continue to face globally—inequality, lack of financial support, and the ever-looming threat of homelessness and instability. It's a poignant reminder that while we've come far, the journey toward ensuring all women can live with dignity, independence, and security is far from over.

Time to leverage our collective strength

It is a time to also reflect and stand on the shoulders of those who paved the way, and we must leverage our collective strength to forge pathways for even greater opportunities for women everywhere

In September, 2023 and recently, I attended two business events. Both highlighted inspiring groups of women, each contributing to community in their own way and illustrating stories of determination, resilience, and above all, gumption in building businesses. These stories also reminded me to stop and consider my own professional journey—which has been a testament to the power of connection, community, and the spirited initiative that has been a guiding force in my life.

Indelible marks of influence

Possibly the most influential figure in my life, was my mother. Though she passed away 15 years ago at the venerable age of 85, her spirit and lessons continue to shape my path. Our relationship had its complexities, but her indomitable spirit and trailblazing nature left an indelible mark on me. She was a pioneer, the first woman to sell Holden motor cars, a formidable member of the male-dominated Melbourne Rotary Club, and a courageous woman who chose happiness and independence over staying in an unfulfilling marriage.

Her legacy of strength and independence is especially relevant today as we navigate the complexities of modern womanhood and is certainly recognised and addressed by the efforts of Fitted for Work (FFW). This remarkable organisation assists women, and those that identify as women to secure employment, and provide support so that women can have options and choices.

When my mother left my father in the ‘70’s , Fitted for Work did not exist. She had to travel the road alone, perhaps that is why I am so inspired that they are now there to provide support for women and their children who need support.

Did you know that a donation of $15 - can provide clothing to a woman to prepare for an interview, by covering the postage of a 5kg Personal Outfitting Parcel.

Empower women

We live in a volatile economy, there are many and constant challenges , many women facing homelessness, and the struggle for financial stability. Raising children and uncertain times is daunting. Yet, through initiatives like Fitted for Work (FFW), there is a beacon of hope. FFW's mission to empower women, to secure employment. It is more than a service; it's a lifeline. It underscores the vital role of community and together we can help to influence change and provide a supportive community that can open doors to opportunities that have often seemed out of reach for many.

Actionable Steps we need to take

While we can also acknowledge some progress towards gender equality, we must also confront the ongoing challenges that women face. To continue the momentum towards positive change for women and contribute to the growth of our communities, we must embrace several actionable steps:

  1. Advocate for Equal Opportunities: Championing policies and practices that ensure women's equal access to all sectors is crucial for dismantling systemic barriers.

  2. Educate and Empower: Investing in education and empowerment programs provides women and girls with the tools needed to navigate and succeed in today's world.

  3. Support Women-Owned Businesses: Actively supporting businesses led by women directly contributes to economic growth and gender equality.

  4. Foster Safe and Inclusive Workplaces: Creating environments where women feel valued and respected is essential for their professional development.

  5. Encourage Male Allies: Involving men as allies in the fight for gender equality amplifies our collective strength.

  6. Amplify Women's Voices: Ensuring women's voices are heard in all spheres is key to fostering diverse and inclusive societies.

  7. Invest in Women's Health: Advocating for improved access to women's health services is vital for the well-being of families and communities.

BUILD RELATIONSHIPS & SUPPORTIVE NETWORKS

So, as we commemorate International Women's Day, focus on building relationships and supportive networks that uplift all women.

The challenges we face are significant, but together, we can create a world where every woman has the opportunity for financial independence and stability. A world where the legacy of gumption handed down through generations becomes the foundation for a future where no woman is left behind.

  • Let's honor the past, champion the present, and innovate for the future.

  • Let's harness our collective power to ensure that every woman, regardless of her background or circumstances, has the support and opportunities to thrive.

  • Let's pledge to be the beacon of hope, resilience, and empowerment and continue to inspire our daughters, granddaughters, and the women in our community. women everywhere.

.Together, we can build a future where every woman has the opportunity to thrive, supported by a community that values and uplifts her. And remember, you have a part to play in this essential journey.
